1. Most of the history revolves around the Rise of the Age of the Queen. There are definitely records of men in Akvos, specifically of the last known King. Tens of thousands of years ago, the King's name has been etched out of history, but whoever he was almost led Akvos to a path of ruin. He was extraordinarily harsh and punishing of the mermaids in Akvos, and essentially treated them like second-class citizens. Eventually, a war broke out when some mermaids rose up to take back their kingdom.
Needless to say, he was executed and a new radical Queen took over and excommunicated the men to send a message. There have been no menfolk in Akvos ever since, and it seems like the population has remained thriving without them. How, the mermaids don't seem inclined to say, but they don't seem to need men to reproduce or to do much of anything in Akvos aside from be a story in a book.
There are far reaching underwater kingdoms, but Akvos is definitely the largest! They all seem to have relatively friendly relationships, and the Queen is a beloved and benevolent ruler.
2. Certainly! For the most part, no one can think of anyone who would want to actively harm the Queen or her family. Queen Wai is beloved, and treats everyone with kindness and courtesy. It's difficult to say why the Princess is missing or what is afflicting Akvos, but the advisors will say that the Princess was acting oddly before her disappearance, and that the Queen has been very quiet about that.
