Unfortunately, there seems to be some kind of barrier that is keeping John's power from working to transport him down/closer to the sound or between levels. There doesn't seem to be any change when it comes to moving across your own level, though. The sound seems to move distantly, as it varies in how loud or quiet it can be, but nothing that directly relates to where you move.

Keep in mind, though - this will take an extended period of time to figure out, as there are hours between each sound.
