The hatchet is a bit worn down, but still usable. The ducttape seems to be unused, however. As for the batteries, while they can't be used for the ship's electrical store, there are various items other characters have found that run on these batteries!

They'll pick up the scent of soil from the garden area! That aside, a few select rooms will smell vaguely of dried blood and rotted flesh which may draw their attention.
