welcome to joikull.QUICK LINKS
The first thing you notice: the temperature. You were comfortable when you fell asleep, but now it’s very, very cold. Even if you pull the blanket up over your head, the chill seems settled into your bones. How did it get this cold? You were sure the flurries at the Temple last week were not in your bedroom. When you finally peek out to face the rest of the world, it will start to make sense. Your room appears to be made of ice now. You are, as far as you can tell, inside an igloo. Your blanketed bed is made of wood, but everything else inside is ice. The door. The desk. The floor. It’s all carved out of the stuff, to an expert degree, sure, but it’s still ice. Hope you picked up an extra jacket or maybe a pair of gloves before leaving the Temple! WHEN YOU WAKE UP.Welcome to Joikull! You’ve stepped into a Winter Wonderland. And we mean that literally - snow is all around you. The buildings are grand, but carved from ice. The streets, the carts on them, and everything else in the world all seem to be made of perfect, unmelting ice. Even the townspeople are made of snow, held together in a kind of flurry that has to be magic. Where the townspeople lack in physical warmth, they make up for in personality - specifically, their interest in you, as Travellers. Have you come to help them? Have you come to visit? Let them show you the wonder and beauty of their home!
You’ve stumbled into a well-run, peaceful citadel. The natives are friendly and inviting to you as tourists to their home. They are very happy to show you around. This is their home, their joy, and they hope you take as much enjoyment out of staying here as they do.
They’re very proud of it, after all.
➜ Astoria powers ARE ACTIVE. Canon powers are NOT active.
➜ You and the rest of the Circle have been brought to a city named Joikull. It is inhabited by a native population made entirely of snow. They have faces, limbs, and features that you can see, and they can speak to you.
➜ Everyone seems to speak a common language - remember, that is probably thanks to your bracelets.
➜ The network IS WORKING. None of the natives have access to it. JOIKULL: MORE THAN JUST THE COLDJoikull, upon first glance, is a winter wonderland. The city is built on the top of a mountain, high up in the clouds, and is sculpted and crafted from ice by a means that is beyond your imagination. It's stunning, and it seems so fragile it's almost impossible that it exists. But here you are, looking directly at an ice structure the size of a building. You can see through it, and yet when you walk in and head up the stairs, it doesn't shatter beneath your feet.
The people of the city are extremely friendly and excitable. They are eager for the chance to show others the way they live. They will show you around and explain everything in great detail, if you ask. Most of their life is familiar, despite the fact they exist as swirls of ice and snow. They live in homes, have jobs and families, and they want you to have as happy a time as possible. That is why, they have decided, it is time for a festival! A celebration of their new friends! Let them show you all of the brand new ways they have learned to craft, to cook, to make, and to live.
This place seems deceptively peaceful. Veterans to the world jumps, however, know they're never sent somewhere without a problem to solve. Think back to Struxta: this might be a problem the native themselves are not aware of yet. Get investigating!
Throughout the duration of this world there will also be some fun side tasks to perform. Things to do that will earn you either coin, presents, or something more. The modteam will be keeping track of activity throughout the duration of the world via a section on this post where characters can link their activity. Participation in these tasks can influence the success or failure of the mission.
Like Mirabar, the characters and their actions in Joikull will be what either saves of dooms this world.
➜ MOD QUESTIONS ask whatever specifics, the city, plots, etc you need to ask about. While there isn’t a list of locations: this is a giant fortress of a city. You can expect to find businesses, locations, structures, etc. that you would normally find in an older city. It’s structured very similarly to
➜ COMPLETED TASKS submit your work. Any amount of effort in Joikull, whether it be assisting the natives or investigating should be linked below to get credit for it, to save Joikull!
➜ Everything native to this place is made of ice and snow. And we do mean everything. The beds seem to be a gift from Astoria, as the natives have never had ‘wood’ or ‘blankets’ inside their city walls before. ➜ Think Elsa’s ice tower, but on a grander, metropolitan scale. ➜ However, they seem to be able to magically create food and fires - though they seem surprised by it themselves - to help make you more comfortable!
➜ The people, on average, are very excited that you are here, and are very interested in being the best hosts. They will show you around the city, explain to your their customs and their ways, and want you to enjoy your time here to the best of your ability.
➜ The city is cold, but you will not freeze to death. Whether it's magic or something else, while you may be uncomfortable and on the wrong side of really cold, there will be no physical or lasting effects of the cold. A NEW KIND OF MAGIC.It doesn’t take long before you start to notice that things around Joikull are... different. It’s nothing immediately obvious, and it will take some investigation and astute observation, but things around the city seem to be changing. Rapidly.
Magic is in the air. Something different than the kind of frosty, glittering magic that has created the city. This interloping magic is warm. How troublesome, in a city made from ice and snow. Why aren’t the natives more worried about this?
As it is, they’re not worried at all. They think this new magic is wonderful. It's is opening them up to new experiences they've never had before. Make water, create colorful displays, move items, have food. They’re still learning about it too. A good amount of this ‘new magic’ seems to be accidental discovery on their parts. Maybe you could provide some insight into what types of things they can learn to do?
➜ There is a new magic in Joikull that seems out of place. But the natives don’t think so, and are in fact, excited to have access to it.
➜ This magic takes all kinds of forms, though the one common factor to them all is that they provide some kind of heat. ➜ This heat is not melting or harming the city or its people, but there does seem to be a subtle change of the buildings and walls. They are in fact melting, but so slowly and subtly the natives don’t notice, or aren't concerned about. BEYOND THE WALLS.Getting natives of Joikull to talk about the world outside of their walls is a surprisingly difficult task. They are experts at diverting the conversation, changing topics, or avoiding answers all together. Even if pressed, there will be very few natives willing to discuss it. Most will just shrug and walk away, ending the conversation.
What they will tell you is that the rest of the world is much like theirs - made of ice and stone and snow. It is dangerous, and most don’t go beyond the walls for fear of never returning. It is not a safe journey. They don’t actually know if there is anything beyond the walls. Why would you be so curious? Why does it matter? Can they interest you in a game? Maybe a ‘warm’ drink?
You think there is something out there. Just beyond the horizon, you can see and sense something is off. Something that is shifting the colors of the sky. You’re not sure if the natives simply don’t see it, or if they’re completely ignoring the signs. And there do seem to be signs - a little more rock than snow on the caps, a glow that can’t be normal.
If you decide to get together to investigate, it will take some preparations. The strange glow seems to be a couple of days journey away - and there’s also the problem of how to get out of the city. The walls that surround you do happen to drop off over a sheer cliff.
Some investigation will lead you to a boarded up door, and beyond that, a labyrinth of stairs.
➜ If you do decide to investigate the strange glow, it will take about 4 days to travel to it. 1 to get through the maze of stairs that make up the entire foundation of Joikull, and 3 to reach the glow.➜ There does NOT have to be a single group that goes over this! You can split up however you like, or organize however you like. ➜ The watches/network will work during this trip, and you will have contact with any of the Circle members who do not follow.
➜ Sign up here if you'd like to take part in this part of the world hop! IN SUMMATION:➜ Welcome to Joikull, a metropolis made of ice and snow, populated by people made of ice and snow..
➜ Astoria powers do work. Canon powers do not work.
➜ There has been an introduction of a strange new magic that doesn’t seem to make much sense given the state of this world. What does a city of ice and snow need with fire?
➜ There is lots of shopping to be done! Festivities and games! Have some fun!
➜ You are able to leave the city, if you prefer a journey. What happens when you venture down into the underground labyrinth of staircases, though, is unknown. Pack a lunch! :)
➜ A strange glow can be seen on the horizon, and you’re pretty sure it doesn’t belong. Will you go investigate? Because you definitely don’t have to. The natives would prefer to stayed, anyway.
➜ Your magical watches will be working.
➜ There’s a task board of things the natives need help completing. If you feel so inclined. These tasks will be mostly related to helping set up and run the festival! Which is a little...counter productive considering the festival is in your honor. Oh well!
➜ And, most importantly, have fun. :)
mod note. This is your world to explore. Ask questions, get involved. Some of the places above has specified the need for player exploration in order to uncover, so please touch on everything you'd like to touch on. We as mods are giving you a setting to play with as you'd like! What happens here in Joikull is entirely based on your character's involvement. There will be plenty to interact with, little background plots to get mixed up in, and a new location to explore. Ask questions! Pull one of us aside for some cool plotting! Figure out what you want to do and how you want to do it, and go.
