Of course, when Simon actually hears something that sounds human-sized moving nearby, he.... turns the flashlight off... which is not what most people would probably do in this situation, but lessons learned in PATHOS-II are lessons learned forever. Sometimes.
Luckily, even without it, you have a pair of glowing red eyes — you know, everybody’s favorite thing to see while lost in a rainy forest, but look long enough and it’ll become obvious they aren’t those of an animal, the movements just that bit too unnatural — and incandescent specks of blue, to go off of whenever the storm blacks out the sky. ]

[ the voice, at least, is human; for being potentially the freakiest thing in this forest, Simon is pretty wary of other possible freaky things, and is in full Vigilant Deer mode.
like he’s pretty sure he ran into an actual ghost at some point so he’s on his toes here ]
ii. river
[ You know what’s great about being underwater? Not much, but Simon’s unlife is inescapably punctuated by it. Except this time it’s rushing waves of muddy water, which makes him acutely aware of the faceplate in front of his eyes in a way he usually isn’t by streaking it with mud and fucking with his visibility.
But he’s overprepared for this compared to those who need to breathe and aren’t in bodies built to walk on the bottom of the ocean, so he keeps his flashlight on, looking for people who are stuck in the torrents. Until he figures out what’s going on, he’s treating this like a mission, he supposes, because what else is he gonna do?
When the mud obscures his vision completely, though, he might stumble into you before he can fix it. He only has his arms to try to wipe it off.... which are also.... covered in mud.... ]
