THE EXPLOSION.
Over the last few days, the city of Joikull has been alive with celebration. Festivities and food and fun have been almost non-stop. It's been a little exhausting to keep up with, but easy enough to enjoy - and you swear you're getting warmer, which makes everything easier, doesn't it? The magic is rampant, but so are the games, the lights, the laughter. They continue to claim that you are obviously the reason! They have to make sure you feel welcome! That you feel celebrated! Hurry- come dance!

This continues. And continues. The sound, the revelry, the music - until, one day, another sound breaks through the cacophony. An explosion, a good distance away. Those who might have caught it can see the same light as before explode upwards into the sky, spreading out much like a cloud. It is the same glow you could see before, from the same place. Actually, you know it's from the same place. But something has...happened.

Immediately following this explosion, and continuing on afterwards, everything magic related seems to go a bit haywire. Astoria-granted powers included. The natives, with their practice and training suddenly seem to have much more magic than before, though to you it suddenly feels too intense, to loud, too much. They seem to get a good enough at keeping a handle on their new intensity to their power, but for those of the Circle? Your powers just aren't more intense, they're a bit...unpredictable- suddenly going off when you don't plan them to, or suddenly changing course.

The glow from the distance is still there, but it seems larger, brighter, and closer. And by this point, you can tell definitively that the city has gotten warmer. By at least 10-15 degrees. Which means that the city is now starting to melt noticeably faster. Dangerously so.
IN SUMMARY:
➜ The natives have been using a lot of magic.
➜ Then, one day, there's a huge explosion.
➜ All magic (including Astoria powers) have been affected, and are now much more powerful than before.
Astoria granted powers are also unpredictable, and can and will go off at random.

DANGEROUS INVESTIGATIONS
It is a couple of days after the initial explosion that the rising tension and fear reaches a peak. Specifically as the result of not only the property damage that has occurred due to the rise in temperature, but the way it seems to be affecting the natives themselves. Over the course of just a couple of days, there have started to be disappearances. Sudden, and seemingly out of nowhere.

Many natives have abandoned the festivities, choosing instead to hide within their homes. Others try to continue on as usual, try to keep the energy up, but there is still a strange sense to the city.

You get word of a meeting taking place in the center of town - a square that had, not a few days ago, been the center of the festivities. Three figures stand among the crowd, and all members of the Circle have been invited.

What we are facing is like nothing we have seen before. But a few of us have met, and discussed the next course of action. You will, of course, not be forced to join either group. But if you do wish to investigate this sudden danger, and find a way to save Joikull, we suggest you pick a path.

We leave at dawn.

IN THE CITY INVESTIGATION
Of the two groups, one starts to form quickly - an investigation that will remain within the citadel and in the city, trying to find the best way to protect the homes and the people here. Once you have selected to be a part of this group, you will be ushered into a building not far from the square.

Your job as investigators will be quite simple: search the city, build up as much of the crumbling structures as you can, and protect the natives.

Your goal: find where the source of the heat and magic is coming from, and find a way to protect the city from it.

Four day into these investigations, it will come to light (either from a member of the Circle of the natives own investigations) that the magic is coming through the doorway down into the labyrinth. The same doorway that your friends and other Circle Members descended into a few days before. There had been no indication before that anything was coming through this door - but now that you check for yourself, there are enough clues to confirm the assessment.

The de-facto native leader is quick to speak up - we must destroy the door, and any other way in or out of the city. It is the only way to protect us.

But that leaves you with the question: will you destroy the doorway to help save the city, dooming the natives and Circle Members alike who have gone out of the city for the other half of the investigations? Vote here with your decision.

But decide quickly, because at the rate the city is melting and the natives are going missing - you don't have much time to wait.
OUT OF THE CITY INVESTIGATION
There is little doubt that something happened to the glow off on the horizon, so it takes little time to gather a group of brave and desperate natives who wish to investigate it for themselves. They will look to the members of the Circle who went to investigate the glow themselves to gather any useful advice they may have.

Once they have taken about half a day to prepare, they will set off down into the labyrinth and off into the harsh landscape, which seems a bit unwieldy as well. It seems that the effects of the explosion have affected the surrounding landscape just as much as it has affected Joikull. The trek will be more dangerous than before, as the weather will randomly become violent and overwhelming. The weather will add one more day onto the trip, totaling 5 days (1 to get through the labyrinth, 4 to traverse the tundra).

Once you arrive, the scene will be vastly different than it was before. The cracks in the stone and ground around you are falling away like sand against a shoreline, and as you get closer to the light it becomes harder and harder to see, and the temperature definitely gets warmer, by at least 50-60 degrees. It's at a point that the natives of Joikull can't come within 100 feet of the 'glow', and any and all ice and snow is completely melted within that 100 foot radius around it.

Another thing you will notice as you get closer and closer to the light is that the intensity of your powers continues to grow, as does the unpredictability at which you can use them. Be careful with your abilities here, Circle Members. You might not know what will happen if you try to use them.

The answer seems obvious: you have to destroy the source of the magic.

The question is: how?

The natives will be looking to the Circle Members for any and all help you can give- especially considering your increased abilities. They have some of their own ideas, but they would involve some drastic measures, and would rather hear your suggestions first.

Let us know here if you have any ideas or suggestions on how best to destroy the source!
MOD NOTES.
As a reminder, the log for this even will be posted on July 8th at 9:00 PM EST! This is also the last long-term event for the foreseeable future, and the end of World #6: Joikull.

Acatalepsy Chapter Two begins after this world ends. We hope you've enjoyed it, and feel free to ask any questions you'd like below!

Question!

So if I'm understanding correctly, the Labyrinth goes down into the mountain and releases to the tundra below - is there something preventing people from going up and over? Or Zari potentially using her air totem to lift people up and back into the city?

Could the "source" potentially be caved in, if the surrounding walls are cracked? Like trying to cover it up with ice/rock by blowing up the surrounding walls.

Alternatively, what happens if our magic interacts with it?

A few questions, some for my other characters...
1. What happened to the beasts that were out there following them the first time?
2. Could healing magic have any effect on either the melting/disappearing citizens or on the glowing magical altering thing?
3. Do the natives have snow/ice magic that a certain red-themed thief could copy and potentially help with rebuilding/slowing the melting process?

1. Would the erratic behaviour of magic affect Vex's flying broom?
2. Does the blue stone received from Faerun seem to be reacting in any way to the magic fluctuations?
3. And linked to 2, Vex plans on investigating the Source; would anything noticeable happen with the stone?
4. ...can she attempt to haggle with the power source to turn down the global warming?

Unless someone is going to attempt to talk her down (which I would welcome), she's not sure it's the best idea wait 4+ days for the outpost team to return. It would be safer to destroy the doors now, and find a way to get the other group back into the city vs. costing more lives and risking more melting.

She's ... having some Akvos flashbacks and doesn't want another world to disappear.

Inej won't try to talk her out of it, necessarily, but she does want to brainstorm ways to try and get them back if they do blow up the door? If that's a viable option.

She's voting for keeping them open but she also was on Akvos and ... welp.

That is a very good plan, and I'm going to ask the mods some questions to that effect because she would want to do that too.

She does have her air totem and has used it canoncially to fly/lift people from places so maybe there's an option where the people outside could go up and over instead of under and through?

[personal profile] wraithes 2019-07-08 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Inej's power doesn't really work well for getting people in and out easily, but she can scale down walls... carrying people back up would be difficult, but she can definitely create a pully-like system or something of the sort to try and lift people.

Inej refuses to vote for destroying the doors and stranding their Circle buddies in the tundra.

Normally wouldn't give a flip, but better not to lose any resources.

Welp there's a whole plot point about him not wanting to trade lives in Infinity War so he'll vote to wait for their allies to return before smashing the doors.

Would also like people to be attempting to help contain whatever's happening while waiting for their allies.

Roy is outside the city, but he's definitely going to try to organize a containing effort with physical barriers. His power isn't really helpful for stuff like this, but he's working on it. Slowly, but surely.
insubordination: (101.)

[personal profile] insubordination 2019-07-07 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
So, Roy is going to draw the connection between the glow and his powers seemingly growing stronger... and try to figure out if attacking the hole with any sort of magic will make it better/worse? His power doesn't lend itself to such things, but if anyone who was stranded outside of the city wants to give it a shot, he would suggest it.

Alternatively, building a containment around the various cracks to attempt to stem the flow would also be something he would try.
thedarkbond: (Default)

[personal profile] thedarkbond 2019-07-08 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ren's powers aren't the most conducive to this sort of thing, but he might suggest that the natives at least attempt using the glow's powers against it to see if it cancels out somehow. He's probably not going to be too eager to use his own powers near the hole until he's more sure of what's likely to happen if he tries (though if literally nobody else wants to then he'll step up), but if anyone else wants to attempt attacking it then he'll support it.

[personal profile] mollymocked 2019-07-08 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly would definitely +1 Ren and Roy's ideas with an emphasis on Ren's because maybe fighting the magic with the same kind of magic is the key to just obliterating everything. Or making it worse.

Also his powers are not gonna be helpful unless everyone needs a Shiro Emiya forest of swords because that's where he's gonna be at right now.
