test drive meme #6
It happens in the blink of an eye.

One moment, you are home. Perhaps you are with your family, perhaps you are at work. It's a completely normal day . . . and then, suddenly, your stomach drops. You are overcome with a sudden sense of vertigo. You cannot see up, or down, or where you are.

You fall flat on your face. It takes a few seconds for you to gain composure and catch your breath. You are surrounded by ancient stone buildings, with carvings you do not recognize etched into the stone. There's a sense of nausea, overwhelming and sudden, when you realize you aren't in Kansas anymore.

. . . or maybe you are. It seems oddly like a state fair, except a bit more mystical, and a bit more . . . well, touched by faerie-magic..

THE TEMPLE OF BEGINNINGS.

Welcome to the "Home Base" of Astoria's Circle. What the actual name of the base is called is lost to the ages, and there's no sense of where you could find it, unless you started asking around.

At any rate, this is a central hub of the Circle, a place of powerful magic and mysterious energy. It is a scattering of ancient stone buildings and for the most part, it looks abandoned . . . except for what seems to be a few items, some rooms taken, items moved or organized, even a small garden planted. These are just the smallest hints that there are people here that have been here before you arrived.

Overall, it's fairly beautiful. However, it is definitely not modern.

Upon exploration, you find that the buildings are kept up by some kind of magic. Some of the rooms have items, things from other Circle members already settled, and others appear to be unclaimed. Pick your rooms, explore the grounds, see the beauty and wonder all around you in such a magical place.

Once you're done with that, though, get ready -- there's a carnival in town.

FEAST FOR THE PEOPLE.
An array of familiar scents welcomes you — it reminds you so terribly of your roots. Perhaps it’s the clam chowder your grandmother used to make, or the distinct smell of your least favorite kind of enchanted crabapple pie traveling through the air.

Regardless, it leads you to a variety of food stands, each and everyone being manned by one of the unseen servants. And lo and behold, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for: food from the very place you’ve come from. The plates and portions are . . . er, floating in air due to how unseen the servants are, but when you reach forward to have a bite, you are promptly stopped. It seems as though the servants are asking for something in exchange.

A sign floats up before you…

“The food is free ♥ But first, find someone and show them…
Your best smile!
A flower! Spring is abound ♥
A neat trick using the power I gave you~”

You’d best get on it — of course, you could try to simply steal if you’re hungry enough, but well...we’ll see how well that goes over.

Ironically enough, the foods you may not be especially partial to will be offered to you without any trouble. Huh.

TEN TICKETS GETS A PENCIL.
There are a large variety of other stalls too. While the food definitely follows you wherever you go, there are small booths set up with games. Anything from a ring toss, target practice, games of strength or games of balance have been constructed and set up all around this patch of grass. You might notice a game from home, no matter how specific or seemingly out of place it appears to be in this festival. You’re here to have fun! And maybe the person standing next to you does too. Will you challenge them? Or let them go ahead?

Besides, don’t you want those prizes? There is a wide selection of "stuffed animals" made out of grass and flowers to be won, but it all comes down to you. These prizes won't wilt or die, either! How lovely. Additionally, some of the booths give you out some arbitrary amount of tickets, regardless of how well you do. If you win, you seem to get . . . less tickets? But if you lose, you get the lot.

Astoria doesn't seem to really get the point of carnival games.

There is a booth to turn in said tickets, though! Ten tickets will get you a bright pink pencil. Fifty tickets will get you a kazoo that makes you irresistibly happy for thirty minutes at a time. A hundred tickets will get you a massive stuffed puppy made out of flowers. And two hundred tickets will get you a tiara made out of flowers. . . . these gifts seem to be Astoria-centric, but you'll surely like them, right?

LOVE IS IN THE AIR.
What is a festival without some carnival rides? They’re scattered around the faire grounds at random intervals, and seem familiar enough, if not for the fact they seem to be held together primarily through magic.

The ferris wheel is made entirely from giant leaves and vines, but is still running, and absolutely safe. You might want to jump on it to see the entirety of the Temple . . . in the (near-ish) distance, you can see Lake Dona, stretching on for what appears to be miles. You can see the Forest of the Fey, equally massive and sprawling . . . and neither seems to have an end in sight. But hey, at least you got a free carnival ride.

Bumper cars? More like bumper logs, floating in a small lake of sorts that (for those who have been in the Circle for some time) definitely wasn’t there before. Crashing into one another is a load of fun, but if you get up-ended, you might wind up being shoved back into the logs unceremoniously by some kelpies. Where in the heck did they come from? (They're harmless, for the most part. Astoria seems to have recruited the more tame ones.)

And, even better, the unseen servants are keen to get new people to know one another! Are you in line with someone you know? Or next to a complete stranger? Either way, you’ll get shuffled into the next cart and put on your way. The Tunnel of Roses is a great place to meet someone, right? It's seemingly sprung up out of absolutely nowhere . . . a dark, quiet, romantic ride on a tiny little boat, just big enough for two! You’ve got some...time to break the ice. The ride apparently lasts four hours.

COMMUNICATIONS.
Upon arriving, you will notice on whichever is your non-dominant hand, you will have a fairly simply screen. A smart watch, if you will. Upon exploration, you will find that it has a directory of all those here with you at the Temple of Beginnings- names, and access to a direct message to them. The watch also has video, audio, and text capabilities, as well as what looks like a collection of messages sent to everyone who wishes to open them. This is your 'network', and also how Astoria can reach out and communicate with you.

There is nothing keeping you from removing and/or losing your watch! But remember that you will not have access to this network without it.

the shrine of the lost.
[ astoria can be found throughout the festival of worlds, as she would like to call it. but most of her time is actually spent outside of the festival, near lake dona. the lake itself is massive, and a tree can be found about thirty or forty feet into the water, seemingly growing out of it. it is a beautiful sight, and astoria can be found sitting on the edge of the lake, watching the water. ]

Walk there. The water will support you.

[ it's gentle, sweet in tone, and sure enough, if you step onto the water, it feels . . . solid. there is an invisible path, that walks out to the tree, and once you near the tree, a shrine suddenly comes into view. it is simple in nature, set underneath the boughs of the tree, and seems to be a space to leave an offering. to whom, you wonder . . . but if you approach the tree, and touch it, names begin to appear. names of those who seem to have been taken home, from the circle. names of those who have been lost.

the travelers had asked her, for a place to remember. she has given it to them. ]
the festival of worlds.
[ astoria will also be wandering around the festival itself, though she seems to be mostly fixated on the food. she seems to be watching people eat, very carefully, before selecting a dish to experimentally sniff.

goddesses (or whatever astoria is) don't seem to really need food, and so she's a bit curious as to how this whole eating thing works. don't mind her, if she's awkwardly staring at you.

or maybe you want to teach her how to play games? she seems to thing the rings are frisbees instead of attempting to get the ring onto the bottle itself. there are a lot of flying objects, here.

or, alternatively, just find her to ask her what the hell is going on. she'll be willing to speak with you in any which way! but no matter where you find her, she will greet you with a bright, ethereal smile: ]

Welcome to the Circle, my dearest Traveler.

MOD NOTE: Threads with Astoria will be capped at ten tag backs per character. Please be patient, as her tag load tends to be more than most. :)

arrival
[ Luckily, Rhys is definitely no stranger to falling on his face. It's just different this time around. As he gets to his feet and looks around, it's pretty obvious that this has got to be something he's made up in his head. Places like this don't exist on Pandora. Places like this, he hasn't even dreamed of.

Obviously, he's having some sort of crisis-dream. ]

Uh. This is-- like. We're dreaming, right? Definitely. We're definitely dreaming.

[ If he tells himself that enough, it's surely true. ]

feast
[ Food. This is pretty much the best dream he's ever had, even if he knows it won't taste like anything. He starts to reach for it, but he's stopped very suddenly-- ]

Oh, whaaaat? Come on, just-- [ He groans. ] Please?

[ When it's obvious asking nicely--or whining--isn't going to help, Rhys let's out a groan and crosses his arms. He's pouting. ]

Fine, I'll play your game. Hey! [ he calls out to the nearest person.

And he gives them a smile. Amazing. ]

tunnel of roses
Oh, no. No no no. No. Nope. Not happening, I am not going in there.

[ Too bad!! Rhys gets shoved into the next cart, and he looks extremely unhappy about it. Even though he has a partner, he folds his arms tight across his chest and grumbles. ]

Aren't these supposed to be fun? I'm not having fun here.
bumper cars?
[ This he can get behind. Rhys is competitive, but it's not exactly the best quality to have. Especially if he keeps gloating ever time he knocks into someone. ]

Hah, got you! Why don't you come over and try to--

[ But then he gets up-ended, tragically, and he lets out a scream. ]

Not fair! Just-- totally not cool!

I. Explore
[It’s a lot to take in. Carmen is so used to new locations, but never has she been to a place where she didn’t have a little background on it. Either her own geographical knowledge or her friend’s voice in her ear feeding the information to her. This is a new one, but not necessarily a scary one. It’s a ruin and that makes it exciting. What’s behind this door? Or this one? Who built this place and what were those people like?

For the moment she’s acting more like a tourist than a thief. She casually opens doors to investigate:
A. The first few doors she opens without thinking only to find it occupied by, well, you. Carmen blinks in surprise and then quickly apologizes, moving to shut the door. “Whoops! Sorry!”
B. After the first few mishaps, Carmen realizes this temple isn’t as ruined as she thought -- it’s definitely being used. She starts to knock before opening doors instead.
]

II. Feast
[The lively carnival was definitely one to check out and while exploring the Temple itself was great, it seemed like a missed opportunity not to check out the noise and liveliness just outside. Her stomach growls at the various smells wafting from the food stalls and she decides she might as well see if there’s anything to write home about. Carmen is not used to magical anything, so seeing all the floating platters makes her eyes go wide with surprise. She wanders up to a nearby one: empanadas. Carmen glances at the sign and then shrugs, turning to the first person who happens to be wandering by, flashing them a smile.]

Want to snag one too? They look and smell pretty amazing.

III. View
[The ride is only appealing for the view it offers her, but as soon as Carmen spots the Ferris Wheel stretching above everything else in the area she just knows she needs to ride it. She makes a bee line for a seat, seemingly not bothered by its strange construction. However, just as she reaches the cart she realizes you are going for it as well. She offers you a smile.]

We can ride together if you don’t mind. I just really want to see more of the terrain. I bet it’s a great view.

IV. Communication: Voice
[Carmen's voice, when it comes over the communication device, sounds bubbly and energetic. She's not too worried about being kidnapped at the moment, too thrilled at the prospect of traveling and seeing so many interesting things.]

Hey! So where is everyone from? I’ve been all over the globe, but this is my first time being...off world I guess. I want to hear about everything!

[There's a pause and then she realizes that most people will probably feel more comfortable talking to her if they have a name first.]

You can call me Carmen.

V. Wild Card
[Carmen will literally be ALL OVER the place. So if I didn’t write a starter but you still want to snag her somewhere just keep an eye out for the bright red hat. I can be reached via PM, [plurk.com profile] bouncyerbear for planning.]

[ something stinks. not in a bad way, really, just in a way that's overpowering enough for her to feel knocked over into the past. it's a scent that's both tart and sweet, like too much sugar poured over a lemon. something in that smell stirs up a memory within the woman: an old bag of bones teaching her brusquely how to make a jam out of kelma tree fruit. it had to be ripe, of course, or else it'd taste like a flabby asshole.

but when she finds the source, the plate keeps jumping out of her hands. a piece of toast with some familiar looking jam on it is already irritating in some way (how did you do that? why did you do that? how dare you? and maybe there's a little bit of panic in the back of her mind too. like the idea of someone she loved being able to make this again... what does that mean? and could she go back to that?) but that's another level.

and the sign? seriously? ]

You dumbass. I've already got a flower in my hair. What more could you want from me? Give me my shit.

[ she reaches out, and the plates snatched out of the way again, mere centimeters from kaine's grasp. it's infuriating. ]

b;
[ bumper logs happen by way of an accident, actually. kaine eventually starts to feel awkward, the entitlement to her grandmother's jam eventually wearing off enough for her to remember she isn't truly wanted in many places. the lake seemed solitary and like a way to float away into the distance, far enough to not be seen but close enough to watch, but uh

the point of the game is that you knock the logs over, so as soon as kaine's bumped, she

picks up a log and launches it at your head, regardless of whether you threw it or not. she thinks it came from your direction, so you might as well duck, all the same. ]

★ARRIVAL:
[The first thing that strikes Steven is the ground against his face, and then the fact that the collision hurts a lot more than he's accustomed to. He's never been impervious to pain, exactly, but he's been resistant to taking much damage from impacts - but now, he can feel his head ringing from the sensation, even after laying there for a minute. It doesn't strike him as that dire right off the bat, thinking that maybe he just fell from really high up somehow...

Yet, hauling himself up is oddly difficult too, as if everything is heavier here. Come to think of it, upon looking around, he has no idea where here is.

He's surrounded by ancient looking ruins, of a fashion that reminds him of the temple he lives in back home. The differences, however, are obvious. He wonders if this is some old Gem ruins he's having a dream about - a flashback from his mom? He's gotten used to this kind of lucid dream reality by now, and his first assumptions all center around the idea that this isn't really happening.

For the first little bit after he arrives, you're probably most likely to see this kid pressing his hand against random temple walls with an expression to deep concentration, as if he's expecting something magic to happen. It doesn't.]

★REALIZATION:
[After someone tells him the gist of what's going on, his mood swings from confused and curious all the way over to concerned. He's just... summoned here? And he's supposed to stay indefinitely? That's can't be right. He just got home! It isn't fair.

He tries to keep any whining to himself, instead focusing himself on figuring out what to do about this new problem. If this isn't a dream, it's not going to solve itself.

He'll approach anybody he sees, calling out to them in hope of getting some more answers.]

Um, hello! Hey there! [He waves his arm.] I'm Steven. Are you from around here? I just showed up, I guess, and I'm kind of confused about this... summoning thing? Can I ask you some questions?

[Some of them might be about the random carnival rides that seem to be all over the place.]

1. Temple

[There's a young girl who looks no more than ten or eleven years old here, and although the expression on her face is quite controlled for a young girl in a strange situation, she's definitely not relaxed. In fact, she's sneaking about the temple surprisingly stealthily.

You might find her sneaking about your room, peeking at your things, or perhaps you'll find her collecting some food and stuffing it in her clothes in case she needs to hoard it.

What's also noteworthy about the child is the kunai in her hand. The small blade looks pretty sharp, and she looks accustomed to holding it.
]

2. Carnival games

[By this time, Hanabi has explored just enough to realize she's unlikely to be able to find herself a way home, so she's playing some of the games.

She doesn't even bother throwing one ring at a time onto the bottles. Instead, she throws them all at once, and manages to land all of them. Any of the games that involve throwing objects, she seems to be well practiced at. If they're a game of chance, she has the same luck as anyone else.

Spotting someone behind her, she turns.
]

Oh, are you waiting for your turn? Please go ahead. I'll play again after.

[At least the kid's polite?]

3. The feast

[Hanabi reads over the written instructions with a frown on her young face. A neat trick with the power Astoria granted her? She hasn't even figured out what the power is yet. A smile? Why would she smile about being kidnapped? She has other things to get back to.

The only acceptable option on the list is giving someone a flower. Especially since the only food anyone seems to be offering her freely is mitsuba. Gross. Hanabi's least favourite food in the world.

She doesn't simply find one flower. She has every intention of eating well, so she collects multiple flowers. Approaching, she offers an orange flower.
]

Here. This is for you.

[The delivery might be a little cuter if her young face didn't look so stern.]

[Vax got here, took one look at his currently empty room, and decided he was going to forestall all thoughts of what the hell just happened to go to that carnival he saw instead.

Because... because to the nine hells with that. He expected the afterlife and instead he got this. It doesn't actually make him stop thinking, stop fretting, or turn that part of his brain off. Nothing ever does.

He stops before an unseen servant, not blinking or really feeling that surprised by that. He does, however, reach a hand out -- slowly -- and poke a sign instructing him to smile if he wants food.

Fine. Vax'ildan can handle that.

He turns, cuts the sign a look, and then gives it his best winning smile. And keeps smiling. And--]

Am I done yet? I think my my lips are getting crooked.

2. TICKET TO RIDE

[A little while ago, Vax saw a ring toss game. He decided that, perhaps, his skill in throwing knives would translate into throwing rings. It seemed like it should. However, he has found a couple things out:

Thing the first: clunky carnival rings are not finely balanced, magical daggers, including one used by the chosen of the gods. They're actually rather shit.

Thing the second: his reflexes are as good as ever, but see thing the first and thing the third.

Thing the third: the targets are weighted and wobble when he throws something.

Vax's expression screws up a little more.]
Oi, I think this might be rigged.

[Feast for the People]

[It's kind of cruel, being surrounded by so many familiar smells after he was just ripped from their place of origin to... here.

Yuya stalks through the food stalls with a dour expression, which grows gradually more concerned as he watches them and sees that there's something... invisible going on behind them.

He stops, staring at one stall as the plates seemingly rearrange and refill on their own. That's eerie. Actually, this is all eerie and maybe he should get out of here.

So he turns on his heels to run, except without looking where he's going that means he's just running into another person entirely.]
Oof!

[Love is in the Air]

[Once he feels more assured that the weird invisible forms aren't harmful, and also more resigned that he's not immediately getting out of here, he makes his way further into the carnival to try and get some more answers.

The ferris wheel is the highest accessible point he can find, and that's how he decides to get a vantage point. He makes his way straight for it and shuffles inside of one of the carts just before the ride jerks to life and starts to spin.]

Hi. [His greeting is distracted, and he only remains sitting for a second before he stands up and approaches the edge of the cart (is this really all plants?) and grips it as he sticks his head out to see into the distance as they go up and up.]

[Ten Tickets Gets a Pencil]

[The carnival games are, ultimately, what truly captures Yuya's attention. It's both a distraction and a habit, giving him something repetitive to do while he thinks about his options, about how weirdly empty his head feels, about home... he has dozens of tickets before he realizes, able to afford a selection of prizes. He picks the kazoo.

And then he just stands outside, staring blankly ahead as he tweets the kazoo, his hands stuffed casually in his pockets. Something about this inexplicably makes him feel better? He feels calmer, now, like this isn't as harrowing as it seemed five minutes ago.

[one: curious beginnings]

[Someone’s vandalizing the home base.

Most of the damage is easily scrubbed away, but really, you’re probably reeling a little from an infestation of lovingly painted dicks on pillars, on walls, in ruins that the vandal has apparently deemed in need of some sprucing up. Other drawings are much more family-friendly, featuring depictions of a figure in a green cloak and scenes of heroic battles, and a few, carved into the rock and not so easily scrubbed away, are even a simple face with googly eyes and a be-tusked smile.

Others are. Mr. Dickbutt over here. In fact, the vandal is working on a beautifully-rendered depiction right now, putting on the finishing touches with a slight little flourish. She must’ve heard someone stepping into the area, but continues merrily on, drawing a few more hairs on the backside before she hops down off her stool.]

So what do you think? Doesn’t it look cool?

[two: harvest close]

[It feels so, so long ago since the last time Jester was able to enjoy a festival. It’s only really been a matter of months, but with, well, everything, it feels as if it’s been so much longer than that. Which means she throws herself fully into this one, and can thus be found at:

a. a game of strength, where the contenders have to ring a bell. Sounds easy, right? Only they’re not allowed to touch the bell, they have to hit a lever hard enough with a heavy hammer to send a rock careening straight up to ring the bell. Jester’s already rolling her sleeves up as she steps forward, and who would’ve thought this little blue tiefling was actually somewhat beefy? She picks the hammer up and hefts it up.]
If I get this on the first try, can I pick the prize?

[And, without waiting for an answer, the hammer comes crashing down.

b. the food stands, where smells of home come wafting out. Jester isn’t immune to the call of pastries, and certainly not the call of pastries from Nicodranas, so she wanders near the stall with the intent on taking a few of them. She’s not deterred by the sign at all, and anyway it’s not so expensive, so she looks around for an easy mark to try her new, Astoria-given ability on.]

Hi! [She grins at them, bright and cheery.] Do you want to see something cool?

[c. the Tunnel of Roses, where you are now trapped in a boat with Jester, alone, for four hours. This is only hour one. She has a book out and has somehow acquired a light. She has been reading that book to you for half an hour, and it goes like this—]

—and Oskar pulled me into the deepest, most passionate kiss I have ever felt in my whole life, more heated than the flames of the Nine Hells, sweeter than the sweetest of candies, and so deep I half-feared I would drown in it. When we finally broke away, I looked into the orbs of amber seated deep into his eye sockets, and I said, “Oh, Oskar!” [If she could roll around in this boat, she would. Instead, she settles for fangirl squealing.] Isn’t that the most romantic thing you’ve ever heard!

[On one hand, there are definitely foods that Klan likes more than others. On the other, right now she'd really just like to be able to eat at all, so upon discovering that the foods she likes less are easily offered, she picks something that she's more ambivalent towards than anything - a vegetable-heavy stir fry of some kind - and leans off to one side of the booth to eat it.

Of course, given that she's currently ten feet tall, she's still extremely noticeable even when she's leaning, and that's without mentioning the mass of blue hair, pointed ears, and what appears to be some kind of futuristic flight uniform she's wearing. If anyone else approaches the booth, she'll glance down at them with a faintly appraising sort of air before nodding to the floating plates.]

Yeah, if you want something you actually like, you're gonna have to jump through hoops. But I promise you I probably won't laugh if you want to do it in front of me.

--

[b: ten tickets gets a pencil]

[Of all the festival games, Klan is naturally drawn to the contest of strength - it's a Zentradi thing, and there's also the fact that her still comparatively colossal size gives her a considerable advantage. At the very least, she gives a passing glance around to make sure she's not about to seriously ruin anyone's day before she swings the hammer up with about as much effort as it would take someone else to lift a toothpick, and slams it down on the platform.

The marker shoots up to the top and sticks there for a moment before dropping back down bonelessly, and Klan's grinning for a moment until she sees the...five tickets the machine spits out in response, which has her looking almost offended instead.]

Hey, that's kinda weak, isn't it? I've seen these things spitting half the reel out for other people. [Mostly people who weren't doing so well, which only adds to the insult.]

[She is no stranger to the sensation, though it has been some time since she's felt it. The falling on her face more recently than the sudden onset of vertigo. Sharp eyes regard the young woman and her new surroundings, before moving to stand. It does not take much for her to come to certain conclusions. This is the woman who called out. She's most likely stuck here for who knows how long. And, she truly does not like the sound of how she says "warrior" or "comrades." At all. Just how many has she abducted?

She follows only to get a better view and quicker than she would have otherwise. It almost looks like a few planets she has visited in her years, but she says nothing. Instead taking in what she can tell -- and trying not to think of how the woman vanishes when she does.

Little touches of others being here, personal belongings strewn about in rooms that are open but she never actually enters; only stopping at the door. Also trying to ignore the sound in the distance as she looks for anyone familiar. Perhaps it's a vain hope, but she had made a promise once.]

Now where did he get off to...? [She hadn't imagined her son's wolf friend being with her, had she?]

b. A feast for the eyes
[It has been some time since she's smelled something this familiar that wasn't roasted large space insect. She follows her nose, completely ignoring if anyone stares after her. Carnivals are so not her thing ans she realizes this, but... food. Food is good.

Food from home is even better. Though she raises an unimpressed eyebrow when stopped, and looks up to read the sign.

Her eyes narrow even further as she furrows her brow.]
That's all?

[This is really, truly irritating. Ridiculous, even.]

c. Like son, like mother- wait that's not how the saying goes.
[She'd been walking toward the vined ferris wheel to get a better view of the place when the unseen servants push her into the line. Krolia begins to protest:]

What? No. I was heading for-

[They don't care. And now she is stuck on this ride with a complete stranger. She sits completely still, not glancing at her likely just as begrudging companion at all. She's prepared not to say a word the next four hours and a potential escape attempt halfway through. Are they?]

arrival.

[ Great, another strange new world to contend with. As if there hasn't been enough strangeness lately to last a lifetime. Everyday, it seems, they've been waking up to more bizarre and increasingly terrible things, but her family soldiers on, that's what they do. They're Robinsons. Only...none of them are here now. ]

Well, that's fairly alarming.

[ Said to herself, but loud enough to be heard by anyone who might happen to be in her immediate vicinity. She's racking her brain to recall her most recent memory, what she'd been doing, who she was with. Will. That's right, she was with Will, trying to make him feel better.

Okay, well, she's here alone for the time being, and Penny is nothing if not resourceful and curious by nature. She'll glean whatever information she can from this place, already fascinated by the temple's design as she ventures further inside. ]

network.

So, hey, I was wondering how long it usually takes for someone's family to show up here with them? Anyone know? Shot in the dark?

[ Totally chill. Calm. She's really worried about her family, but admitting that out loud on the device would mean it's potentially being recorded and she can't betray her cool exterior completely. ]

I'm Penny, by the way.

[a: the temple of beginnings]

[Mikumo doesn't have the best history with temples, she'll be the first to admit that. But this one seems a great deal more inhabited than any of the others she's had to investigate, and a certain curiosity about that leads her to wander through the temple before doing anything else, looking over the rooms and small signs of habitation within.

As she goes, she sings a soft and quiet, wordless tune, her voice clear and pitched perfectly. It's not supernaturally arresting in the same way it would be in her world, but it's certainly noticeable just by the sheer purity of voice. Once she hears someone come close who might have been drawn by it, though, it stops as she half-turns on her heel to face them. Her outfit is certainly odd to look at of itself - it doesn't seem quite like it should be real.]

Ah, so there are other people here. I don't suppose you'd have time to sate my curiosity a bit?

--

[b: love is in the air]

[Mikumo doesn't usually do this sort of festival stuff, but she's here now and some of it might tell her more about this place, so she decides to at least look in on a few things.

The ferris wheel in particular seems likely to give her an impression of this new world without her having to go and explore herself, so she steps into a cabin with someone else more than willingly...and then is completely silent for most of the way up, to the point it might be kind of awkward. Eventually, though, when the sight of the seemingly endless forest is visible from the top, she gives a faint hum of interest and finally speaks up.]

temple of beginnings;

[Carnival? What carnival? There are no festivities over here. Anyone popping into the temple kitchen today will find not a party but rather a teenage boy stuffed inside the pantry and wielding a kitchen knife. He's hiding. From ghosts.

Because what is wrong with you maniacs, fuck this shit!]

ten tickets gets a pencil;

[Suddenly there is a giant, pink puppy made of peach blossoms in your face. There seem to be a pair of sneakers below it, but that's not important.]

Be a peach, and take me home, yeah?

[The following wink is audible. Which is good because no one can see it around the giant peach puppy.]

love is in the air;

[Shintaro has settled comfortably on the edge of the bumper log lake, crouched on the embankment with his watch poised to record a video of the scene before him.

Have you just fallen off this hilariously unbalanced ride? No problem! Your fun isn't over. Shin smiles wide as he perfectly captures your poor, soggy victim being unceremoniously mandhandled by a kelpie.]

Say lesbians!

Feast:

[When had it been since Sora had last eaten? He does lose track sometimes. So of course it is easy for him to get distracted in his explorations of new worlds and everything else. Probably why his stomach then decides to protest when he smells the food on offer, as his nose leads him nearby.

There's a pout when he's told he has to do something first, before he gets something to eat. But the examples given seem easy enough.

Which is exactly why he then changes from the trademark pout of his to the trademark smile. That big grin at his lips as he turns from the food to whoever might be nearest.]

Ferris Wheel:

Oh, neat! This looks fun!

[He's more used to the simple play Islands back home. Than amusement parks and rides like this. So of course this is exciting for him and Sora is keen to try the rides. He beelines for the ferris wheel, figuring it would make a good vantage point to then see the rest of the area a bit better.]

Communication:

[Sora....is not the best with technology. Hence what he might manage to get out is more like a random keysmash as he initially tries to figure out how to actually use the watch. That and/or just a really big close up of his bright blue eye if he manages the video function.]

How does this work? I press this....? Having something like this would be useful back home. If it lets us talk to people.

[Especially given there were times he was separated from his friends. Like now. So. Yes, it would definitely be handy.]

[ Feast for the People. ]

[ Alto was not particularly hungry. Not when his only option to eat comes with a catch. While the scent of ramen from and buns from the shop where Ranka worked was tempting, he just couldn't. He couldn't believe that the taste would ever be the same.

What did come free were the vilest food in his galaxy. Delicious for some of the people back home with particular tastes, but what he wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole.

Sighing, he began to walk away. As long as he could find a kitchen, he could satisfy his own palate later. ]

[ Love is in the Air. ]

[ There was a lot of things going through Alto's mind as he stood in front of the Ferris Wheel. He wondered how he had survived or if he actually died. Why was he brought here? Or if this was all a dream and none of this was real.

Alto stood in front of the Ferris Wheel, but not entirely sure if he wants to go in. On the upside, he would be able to take a better look of this place. The downside was he didn't know if he can trust the technology in this place.

Another upside ...

... he might be able to take a closer look at the sky. For as long as he could remember, he wondered what the sky looked like back when their people still inhabited Earth. More than ever, he wanted to know if this was real sky without limits.

The sky he could never touch. ]

[Lift is pretty suspicious of the whole deal, but since none of the VISIBLE people keeled over and died after eating the food, she assumes it's safe enough. And then... then she sees it, in a pancake stall offering the best of Yeddew.

The legendary tenth pancake.

It was supposed to be symbolic, meant only for the gods, yet it is here now. And that storming ghost won't let her have it! Well, Lift will just have to TAKE it. You may find her:

A. Attenpting to steal the pancake from the invisible servant. Lift crouches on top of a nearby stall until she thinks the ghost is distracted (how she figured it out is anyone's guess) and pounces... only to trash into you, or the stall you're at. Invisible servants are very quick.

B. Attempting to steal the pancake from YOU. Right from your hand, in fact, as the servants are happy to offer it to anyone but Lift. She is quite the effectual thief, but not perfect... and you can always give chase.

C. Finally getting desperate enough to ask someone for help.]

"Hey, what does it say?"

[She points to sign. Yeah, she can't read. And apparently didn't bother to find out until several attempts to steal.]

I. arrival
[ well, he hasn't learned everything he'd like to just about yet, but whatever sinister plot may be lurking underneath astoria's radiant smile and the sunshine and glitter can be mulled over as the place is explored. playing it safe is the best option, but as long as the forces that be are treating him as an ally, he'll take the opportunities. all potential experience is lost after the venue doors close on you, after all.

after he's poked around the temple some, spots the beds, the kitchen, the baths... one thing becomes clear. ]
This season's going to last awhile, isn't it?

II. feast
[ among the many impulse-driven servants back home, amadeus is perhaps the least tempted by food, but something about that bowl of liver dumplings and sauerkraut is really calling to him. he hasn't had anything like it in some time... and, he's actually hungry for once. is he really corporeal, after all?

if he is, he probably shouldn't wait until he's famished... but, "a trick" is required. a trick, right?

... yet, despite his best, and most immediate, efforts, the closest thing to an instrument... if one would be so bold as to call it that, that amadeus could procure in a short amount of time... is the kazoo. ]
...

[ after a long, suffering moment of deep thought, amadeus begins to plays something for whoever may be walking through the festival today — before abruptly stopping partway through. ]

Nope, sorry. I can't do it. My ears will surely rupture if I continue.

III. games
[ for a time, he's idling by the shooting gallery, appearing to thoughtfully consider his angle from afar as he weighs the toy rifle in his arm... when he spots a passerby.

he gives a smile before gesturing to the targets. ]

How about it, do you want to compete? I'm better at this than I may look.

IV. network
[ with exposure to chaldea's advanced communications technology, and everything leftover from the twenty-first century, amadeus figures out the smart watch pretty quickly. predictably, he's partial to audio. ]

Hello! If there were anyone out there who knew where I might be able to get my hands on a musical instrument or two, I'd be deeply indebted to them. By rent or otherwise.

Spinet, violin, oboe, french horn. Anything will do.

]

I-- I'm sorry, pardon me-- [She says to the first person walking by, as her fingers trail across a mossy tree branch and her eyes are fixed on a bird she has never seen before.]

What part of Africa is this?

ii. feast for the people
[Good sense tells her not to eat anything she finds here (didn't she hear a fairy story about something like that once?) but as time passes, the hunger begins to gnaw in the pit of her stomach and maybe-- maybe just one little thing couldn't hurt?

Jane is a well-bred woman, and stealing is not high at all on the list of things she wishes to tick off before she dies, but when the peculiar payment of 'your best smile' is requested she can only blink, and then--

Well, then she smiles.

Well-- like that?

FEAST FOR THE PEOPLE

a)
Impossible. No, it simply... it cannot be—

[One smartly dressed man has also found himself at the booths filled with treats. He stands in front of a table filled to the edges with desserts of all kinds— rolls and cakes, cookies and pastries. The sugary scent is enough to nearly drive off even the most determined sweet tooth, but for him... for he, Antonio Salieri—

It is an glimpse of paradise.

—Of course, paradise does not come easily to those who seek it. Almost immediately as the sign shoots up Salieri is scowling, his red gaze sharp enough to pierce a hole right through the flimsy thing. But these "Servants" as they call themselves refuse to let him have even a single cupcake. Not until he can offer up one of the suggested items.

... Ridiculous.
] You there!

[A very agitated Italian man is now barking at you, determination flaring in his eyes!] Allow me to show you something.

Do you have a favorite animal? A dog, a cat perhaps?

[Well, he seems pushy!]

TEN TICKETS GET A PENCIL.

b)
[The longer Salieri meanders about, the more... familiar this place is starting to become.

It unsettles him quite a bit— for everything he's been noticing since his arrival here reminds him less of his time spent in Chaldea... and more of the time he spent as a human. The life before succumbing to his other self... he thought every trace of it was gone, banished from his thoughts when he became a Servant himself. But now in this place, he smells the variety of Vienna, the textures and tastes... and other things:

The puppet show, for example.

He stands and watches as a someone from behind a makeshift stage props up marionettes of different shapes and characters. A purple, glittery princess frolics back and forth, while a silver knight pursues her on a knobby white horse. There is gleeful laughter around him but he cannot tell who else is watching. Salieri seems mesmerized by the show— arms crossed, his silver brows furrowed and his lips pressed tight.

The puppeteer from behind the stage jeers loudly: "Will the fair lady allow the prince to court her? Or will she turn him away and run right toward the dragon's lair?! Whoever picks right gets a prize!"

Salieri remains silent— until:
] What do you think?

[Whether you were just passing through or paying attention to the show as well, he seems interested in a response.] What will she do?

LOVE IS IN THE AIR.

c)
... I can ride on my own. There's no need to wait

[It's one thing to be pitied for wanting to ride a ferris wheel on your own, but it's another thing entirely for the staff to try and find a partner for you to ride with. Salieri has no qualms about simply leaving if they won't allow him on, but the helpful carnival workers merely pat his back (or try to, what with them being ghosts or something of the like) and are pretty resilient about finding him a second rider.

Salieri is looking just a bit worse for wear— embarrassed, if not completely defeated. Maybe you ought to extend some mercy and suggest to sit beside him so they can stop hassling already... ?

[If he believed in curses or thought this compared at all in severity to Biff’s death, he would wonder if Biff’s death inflicted a fish curse on him.]

[As it is, though, he is just eating the fish he is given. He is hungry, after all.]

☆ o1. NEW BEGINNINGS.
[ Some things happen for a reason. We remember, we forget; and then we begin anew.

Something about this temple feels familiar, and maybe that's what keeps Serah grounded as she roams the grounds. This isn't the first time that she's found herself displaced, but considering the last thing that she remembers, there's something unsettling that knots in the pit of her stomach. The out-of-body feeling of a vision coming on—one that's just out of reach, she can't quite recall—a jolt of something lancing through her body, and...

Darkness. Nothingness. Death. The fate of a Seeress, one she had both been running away from and had come to terms with long ago. Maybe even before Etro's blessing was bestowed to her, it's hard to say. So she can't help but wonder...

    Is this... the afterlife? ]

☆ o2. SHOW AND TELL.
[ Weird, unseen servants aside (this isn't the first time she's encountered something like this), Serah seems to be enjoying just looking at the various dishes on display. There's such a variety! Where did all of this come from? It's almost like magic! She's certainly impressed.

And when she finds something tantalizing enough to try, Serah reaches out only to jerk her hand back when the plate floats away. Whoa! A sign swings into view, and as the pink-haired woman blinks rapidly in surprise, she gives it a quick read. ]

That's not exactly free... [ ASTORIA SHE'S ON TO YOU ALREADY. Serah turns toward the nearest person; ] Do you really think that'll work? I guess we'll have to try and find out, huh?

[ And yet she's not making the first move. Hmm. ]

[It's been a while since All Might visited any kind of carnival without, let's be real, being one of the attractions. It's not as if he doesn't like them. People giving up their time to make other people smile, festivities to remind them of the smaller pleasures in life despite whatever confusion or malevolence could be lurking under the surface... society in microcosm, if you think about it.

He'd be content to people-watch, except he's encountered - a problem. Several problems. Several problems, all of them on plates that bob and twirl around his emaciated shoulders as if vying for his attention. Which is strange, isn't it? He's quick enough on the uptake to know that he's a long way from home.]

Really, my boy... or, uh, whatever you are! [He is doing his best to wave the festival food away without knocking it onto the grass. It isn't working well.] I know what it looks like, but I'm perfectly -

[Oops, one second. Just as a steaming hot ramen bowl very nearly careens straight into a passerby, he dives to catch it with both hands. And catch it he does, even landing on his feet with startling grace for someone who looks like he could snap like a twig at any moment.]

Apologies. Are you all right?

[B: tunnel]

[The boats in this tunnel are very small. The man you have somehow found yourself floating past the flowers with is... not small. He may not seem to have a shred of muscle anywhere on his body, but his head would bump up against the ceiling if he wasn't hunched over like an overgrown spider, knees almost touching his chin.

He offers his undoubtedly cramped partner an apologetic smile. At least, it's probably an attempt at a smile. The dim lighting and his sunken features make it look a bit like the poster of a horror movie.]

I really thought this line was for the Ferris wheel... Well, we live and learn.
